Maybe, like me, you’ve waited 25 years for this film! I love the witchcraft in Practical Magic. The way the story is written, it’s just part of their lives. Sure, it causes problems with the ignorant or prejudiced townfolk, but the women of the Owens family know who and what they are. I wanted to write witches like that.
I settled my first set of witches in Los Angeles. I’ve lived there and I promise you, a witch could happily reside in the Hollywood Hills with no one the wiser, or with those who understood simply waving it off. The witches aren’t the weirdest thing in town, not when Frankie Muniz (of Malcolm in the Middle) is racing his hotrod down your street.
But now, I’ve moved into the Blue Ridge mountains and created the town of Belle Hollow. If you’re a fan of Schitt’s Creek, then you might recognize that they built a town without homophobia. There were certainly a lot of other problems there, but the writers wanted a world where that wasn’t one of the issues. I wanted Belle Hollow to have a similar streak of being out of the ordinary. So everyone in town knows and accepts the local witches. Heading out into the surrounding Virginia towns can be a problem, but in Belle Hollow magic is par for the course.
