That One Comfort Read…🍷☂️📖

Everyone has one… or more. Don’t we?

That comfort read. The one where you know exactly what will happen and you read it anyway. Some people read their comfort reads once a year. Mine isn’t quite that often. I re-read it maybe every other year. Maybe every third.

It has one of my favorite opening lines ever: “She woke in the body of a dead friend.”

How could you possibly not devour this whole story after that opening line?

This story also has one of my favorite things: a touch of the supernatural. Not a lot, just a dash. Just the belief that Tory Bodeen could know things she couldn’t possibly know. And that the right man would always believe her and never think she was evil.

It’s an old Nora Roberts novel. From back in the day when she gave you a villain and it was wrong. You still had to solve the mystery, because who you obviously suspected had been bad, but they weren’t the big bad! And if you read enough of hers then, you caught on. Midnight Bayou. Tribute. Blue Smoke. I liked all of them. But I love Carolina Moon.

If you’ve read my books, you can see that hint of the supernatural. I made witches, but I made them in a world where they are believed. Like Nora did, I found them the right men: the ones who believe, who understand, and would always be at their sides.

None of these Nora books from this era are truly romantic suspense, but they definitely have a mystery to solve at their heart. I put that in my stories too. So as I write the Witches of Belle Hollow books, I think it’s time to go back and do my comfort read. It’s time for another go round with Cade Lavelle, maybe one of my favorite heroes of all time. If you haven’t read it, you should. If you have and you loved it, try Rowan’s Crossing.

Happy reading!
